The HITECH Act and your Office

The ARRA Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive program provides generous incentives for you to integrate Electronic Health Records (EHR) into your practice; up to $44,000 over 5 years of meaningful use for a Medicare provider and up to $63,750 for a Medicaid provider.

The Recovery Act specifies the following three components of Meaningful Use:

  1. Use of certified EHR in a meaningful manner (ex: e-prescribing).
  2. Use of certified EHR technology for electronic exchange of health information to improve qualify of health care.
  3. Use of certified EHR technology to submit clinical quality and other measures.

Combined dates relevant to Medicare and/or Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs January 1, 2011 - 2011 EHR Reporting period begins for eligible professinal January 2011 - First EHR Incentive payments for Medicaid eligible professionals are delivered January 3, 2011 - Registration for the Medicare EHR Incentive Program begns April 18, 2011 - Attestation for the Medicare EHR Incentive Program begns May 2011 - First EHR Incentive Payments for Medicare eligible professionals are delivered October 3, 2011 - Last day for Medicare eligible professionals to begin their 90-day reporting period for calendar year 2011 December 31, 2011 - EHR Reporting year ends for eligible professionals Debruary 29, 2012 - Last day for eligible professionals to register and attest to rceive an Incentive Payment for calendar year 2011 October 3, 2012 - Last day for Medicare eligible professionals to begin their 90-day reporting period to receive the full $44,000 under the Medicare EHR Incentive Program 2014 - Last year to start participating in the Medicare EHR Incentive Program 2015 - Medicare fee schedule reductions begin for eligible professionals not meeting Meaningful Use 2016 - Last year for Medicare eligible professionals to receive an incentive payment 2021 - Last year for Medicaid eligible professionals to receive an incentive payment
